Basic surgical skills and techniques pdf download

This book aims to facilitate the more rapid learning required in a modern surgical programme, with concise chapters on the main techniques that need to be mastered in the early years of training. It is intended to be read by senior medical students, and housemen or interns, but may also be a useful revision for those about to take their first surgical postgraduate examinations.

This book is written by working general surgeons to enhance the practical training of their own teams. It is also an international collaboration between London and New Delhi, and will be of use to students studying the art and science of surgery everywhere. It is not an exhaustive reference book, but more of a brief guide, to be used as a learning tool mainly in operating theatres and emergency rooms. The full range of surgical skills is comprehensively reviewed in a clear 'how-to-do-it' style, which consolidates those learnt both in theatre and on training courses.

Now renamed Kirk's Basic Surgical Techniques a new author has comprehensively revised the text taking full account of new developments in surgical techniques and equipment. With the aid of simple line drawings depicting each operative step, more than one hundred frequently performed procedures are explained and demonstrated.

The reader will learn how to perform each procedure effectively and safely, avoiding potential complications. The full range of surgery is covered, including basic surgical skills, day surgery procedures, emergency surgery procedures and minimally invasive surgery.

The movies are captioned to emphasise essential points. The traditional methods of teaching and practicing basic surgical skills under apprenticeship model, no longer occupy the first place in modern technically demanding advanced surgical disciplines like neurosurgery.

Furthermore, the legal and ethical concerns for patient safety as well as cost-effectiveness have forced neurosurgeons to master the necessary microsurgical techniques to accomplish desired results. This has lead to increased emphasis on assessment of clinical and surgical techniques of the neurosurgeons.

However, the subjective assessment of microsurgical techniques like micro-suturing under the apprenticeship model cannot be completely unbiased. A few initiatives using computer-based techniques, have been made to introduce objective evaluation of surgical skills. This thesis presents a novel approach involving computerized evaluation of different components of micro-suturing techniques, to eliminate the bias of subjective assessment.

The work involved acquisition of cine clips of micro-suturing activity on synthetic material. Image processing and computer vision based techniques were then applied to these videos to assess different characteristics of micro-suturing viz. In parallel subjective grading on these was done by a senior neurosurgeon. Further correlation and comparative study of both the assessments was done to analyze the efficacy of objective and subjective evaluation.

This book has been authored with the intention of imparting practical knowledge and skills from the field of operative otolaryngology. This book contains various topics including basic surgical techniques. The author has ensured that recent surgical techniques are discussed in a detailed manner. Otolaryngology surgery is very demanding and instrument intensive.

Major novelties as far as surgical instruments are concerned had taken place in the field of otolaryngology. These instruments are discussed in detailed manner in this book.

Although many of these skills are the same as those used by their 20th century predecessors, today's trainees need to keep abreast of rapidly changing and advancing technologies that were not available even ten years go.

At the same time, basic surgical training for medical students and for junior doctors is being compressed into a shorter timeframe, as other medical specialties evolve and need to be taught in growing curricula. There is increasing emphasis on communication skills, and self-directed learning in many undergraduate programmes, and the student of surgery today has, therefore, to learn more in less available time.
